Since the beginning of recorded history humanity has dreamt about flight. The earliest flying toy originated in China around 320 A.D. and was one of the earliest helicopter concepts, with a propeller attached to a stick that achieved flight after being spun rapidly with the hands. Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519), the Italian artist, engineer, and philosopher had a particular fascination with human mechanical flight and most of his ideas drew inspiration from nature. He designed machines that employed flapping wings to generate lift and propulsion, just as birds do. …
